PepPod energy tablets
- Cons: Takes 5 minutes to dissolve; Hard to drink on the go; Only comes in one flavor
- Bottom Line: The little effervescent tablets give athletes a more convenient energy drink option than canned and shot varieties making them a great option for instant energy bursts.
- MSRP: $1.50 per tablet
Drop the small effervescent tablet into a cup or bottle of water, wait about 5 minutes and you’ll get an energy-packed, healthy drink that tastes better than many drinks on the market.
Boulder, Colo.-based PepPod makes the individually packaged tablets small enough to fit inside popular stainless steel or aluminum water bottles (like SIGG and Klean Kanteen) and it will, of course, fit in bike bottles, Nalgene bottles and anything else.
Though I’m not a believer in energy drinks, it seemed to energize me during afternoon slumps and all-day activities.
With only one calorie and one carbohydrate, PepPod tabs are healthier than other canned energy drinks on the market, and they don’t cause a crash that many people experience with other drinks.
Compared to things like Red Bull, PepPod provides much less sugar (it doesn’t have any), fewer carbs, and much more B1, B2, B6, B12 and other vitamins and minerals.
And it tastes good.
When mixed with about 10 ounces of water, the orange-flavored drink is not watered down and not syrupy. Of course you can make it more diluted by adding more water.
The tablets are individually packaged in a waterproof foil and easy to stash in a pocket making them ideal for backpacking trips or other adventures when you want low weight and limited trash. Plus you don’t have to worry about keeping them cold.
Though the company formed in 2005, it didn’t launch the tablets until December 2008, so hopefully they’ll be producing more flavors and continuing to evolve.
